Furthur Design, Glass

Bill (William Couig) was my neighbor at Brooklyn Designs last year and we imediately hit it off. He's a very affable and easy going guy. His glass work is modern and reminiscent of scandanavian design, but that unfairly simplifies the personal twist he imparts in his pieces. There's a wit and whimsy in both the man and his work.
There's an optimism and clarity in his glasswork that makes one smile. Case in point is his "contact lense" basin.
Pictured on the left is Bill's cousin Chris, always a joy to be around, and on the right is glassblower Kanik Chung.

Kanik Chung, Glass

Kanik's work is sculptural and liquid. I especially liked the work that he chose for this year's Brooklyn Designs show. He explained to me that the glass that he uses is particularly clear because it is free of impurities that tend to color the glass.
Kanik's work can be seen at www.kanikchung.com
Kanik is a fellow Brooklyn based craftsman. You might recognize his work in the Bombay Saphire ad, the glass made from a "lemon rind" is his creation.

I got a bike

May is bike month. I decided that since gas is about four bucks a gallon it was about time to get a bike to commute to my workshop in Brooklyn. In my search for the perfect bike to suit my needs I came upon the Amsterdam from Electra. It's proven to be a great choice. I trained Kona (our dog) to run alongside the bike, and I even bought a special gadget designed for such a purpose. The commute from Chinatown to DUMBO is about 10-15 minutes. The views are amazing, Kona loves the commute and we're both enjoying the ride.
Here's the bike.

Brooklyn Designs 2008

Brooklyn Designs had quite a turn out despite the driving rain. The bamboo wall got a lot of attention in my booth,. as did the reversible bamboo table top.
