Bamboo armoire for a DUMBO couple

I designed this huge armoire for a couple in DUMBO who had their entire 1500 sq. ft. apartment/loft designed by architect Igal Toledano of White Plains, NY whom I've known as a client for years. Igal referred the couple to me knowing that I would add a good amount of texture and "sophisticated rusticity" to their stark white loft. The armoire was designed to hold their electronics, and glassware, and a collection of books and CD's .

I was inspired by Japanese tansu chests and decided to break up the huge expanses of bamboo texture with blocks of other woods to add interest to the four large doors. I loved working with this client since she was very much a part of the creative process, from working with color samples I made up for them, to the design process and even the placement of the vents in the back of the cabinet and number of shelves. Ultimately I added rectangular door pulls to the cabinet since the touch latch we orginally intended as per the client's request didn't fair well for such large doors. The door pulls were made of African Bubinga.
